Adjectives - Let's play a fun learning game!

I just completed my second assignment for the Teaching English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL) course and I had this idea toying around in my head whilst I was reading the material for the unit and even whilst I was doing the assignment. So what is it that I am speaking about? Well this particular unit was an Introduction to Grammar - parts of speech! Now English is the only language that I speak fluently so I figured, I know my grammar.. but let me tell you - reading about nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, prepositions, articles and gerunds (yes I said gerunds) I was like .. what? Oh, okay - so sometimes is an adverb! Great! And well I never even knew the word gerund before but I use gerunds all the time. However, I'll leave that for another time.

Moving on.. so I decided to try and write a hub about ADJECTIVES. I am not sure if hubpages will allow a hub like this but I'm sure they'd let me know by sending me a message or flagging my hub. I sincerely hope it's okay though. So my idea for this hub is simple. I will explain what an adjective is and then I will list about ten (10) adjectives to get the ball rolling. Then I will like for anyone who is reading this hub to leave a comment and add three (3) to five (5) really good adjectives in the comments box. I will add them to my listing and sort them alphabetically. I will continue to add adjectives until I have a list of probably about fifty (50) or if this is working out really well.. who knows maybe one hundred (100) and then we'll see. We can all the keep a copy of these adjectives and use them to help spice up our writing, to improve our descriptions of our nouns etc and just to increase our knowledge base. So what do you think? I hope this works! Maybe then I'll do it with other grammar parts of speech but let's start with my favorite first - Adjectives!

Simply put, adjectives are words that are used to describe nouns such as people and things or to say how a person or thing - feels, is, seems, becomes, looks, sounds, tastes or smells. I learnt this from the TESOL course.

Adjectives are all about description! Some simple examples include: big, small, clean, dirty, tall, short etc. However, be careful not to confuse adjectives with adverbs.

Adverbs describe how things are done or happen. For example - like I learnt in my TESOL course, Unit 2 : He looked angry to me. Here angry is an adjective because it describes his appearance. Now examine this sentence - He looked angrily at me. Here angrily is an adverb as it describes the verb (in other words the way he looked at me - how he looked!). Understand?

Let me not digress, back to adjectives! Adjectives are usually used in groups of two or three (in a list form) such as: Ana is intelligent, friendly and stunning. Boy doesn't Ana sound wonderful? See adjectives :-)

I can go into more detail about comparative and superlative adjectives and then list the rules of spelling certain words based on which context they are used but this is not an English course and I also don't want to get in trouble for using TESOL's material. So I just explained the gist of adjectives to make my point based on what I learnt today. I hope you understand. Also everyone on Hubpages writes in English so we are good to go! Now on to listing adjectives! 

If you decide to add a word to the list that is very unique and we might not know the meaning of, please put a simple explanation in brackets. If not I can always add something once you've listed the adjectives. 

Okay so I got a great list of Adjectives thus far - thank you guys. I realized that the definitions are necessary in order for you guys to properly use these adjectives. I got all the definitions from Oxford University Press online.

1. Alluring: attractive and exciting in a mysterious way: an alluring smile
2. Arrogant: behaving in a proud, unpleasant way, showing little thought for other people
3. Astonishing: very surprising; difficult to believe
4. Awesome (I just like this one!): very impressive or very difficult and perhaps rather frightening; very good, enjoyable, etc.
5. Contemporary: belonging to the same time; belonging to the present time
6. Courageous: showing courage (bravery)
7. Deplorable: very bad and unacceptable, often in a way that shocks people
8. Disparaging: criticizing someone or something (to suggest that somebody or something is not important or valuable)
9. Divine: coming from or connected with God or a god; wonderful; beautiful
10. Effervescent: (of people and their behaviour) excited, enthusiastic and full of energy; (of a liquid) having or producing small bubbles of gas
11. Exuberant: full of energy, excitement and happiness; (of plants, etc.) strong and healthy; growing quickly and well
12. Finicky: (disapproving) too worried about what you eat, wear, etc.; disliking many things; needing great care and attention to detail
13. Funky: fashionable and unusual; with a strong rhythm that is easy to dance to; having a strong unpleasant smell
14. Gigantic: extremely large
15. Gorgeous: very beautiful and attractive; giving pleasure and enjoyment
16. Humongous: very big
17. Hypersensitive: very easily offended
18. Hysterical: in a state of extreme excitement, and crying, laughing, etc. in an uncontrolled way; extremely funny
19. Incandescent: giving out light when heated; very bright; full of strong emotion
20. Incompetent: not having the skill or ability to do your job or a task as it should be done
21. Indubitable: adverb indubitably - in a way that cannot be doubted; without question
22. Infinitesimal: extremely small
23. Intelligent: good at learning, understanding and thinking in a logical way about things; showing this ability
24. Itchy: having or producing an itch on the skin
25. Magnificent: extremely attractive and impressive; deserving praise
26. Mellifluous: sounding sweet and smooth; very pleasant to listen to (pleasing to the ear; generally used for a person's voice, tone or writing style)
27. Radiant: showing great happiness, love or health; giving a warm bright light;
28. Repulsive: causing a feeling of strong dislike; very unpleasant
29. Resplendent: brightly coloured in an impressive way
30. Sanguine: cheerful and confident about the future
31. Spectacular: very impressive
32. Spooky: strange and frightening
33. Squiggly: twisty and curly
34. Statuesque: tall and beautiful in an impressive way; like a statue
35. Stunning: extremely attractive or impressive; extremely surprising or shocking
36. Unrequited: (of love) not returned by the person that you love
37. Voluptuous: (of a woman) attractive in a sexual way with large breasts and hips; giving you physical pleasure
38. Voracious: eating or wanting large amounts of food; wanting a lot of new information and knowledge;
39. Wifely: (old-fashioned or humorous) typical or expected of a wife
40. Xenophobic: from the noun xenophobia - a strong feeling of dislike or fear of people from other countries

Okay so there you go. I've added ten pretty common adjectives but ones that I like. Please keep on adding, let's increase our knowledge base. I know you can always google adjectives and I am pretty sure you will get a nice long listing that you can print out but what I am looking for here is for people to contribute just a few adjectives that they really like and that are great words to use when writing articles. I don't just want to grand listing of every adjective under the sun. If no one read's this hub and add comments then I'll probably end up deleting it but I don't want to do that - so come on... add an adjective Please.. Pretty Please?
